Penguin Promises! (23rd - 28th May)
Gabby is “waddling” 150kms from Gansbaai to Simonstown to raise awareness for the plight of the African Penguin and to inspire social change in human behaviour which will ultimately assist in the recovery of African Penguin numbers. She will leave Gansbaai on the 23rd May and arrive in Simonstown on the 28th May. Hayley McLellan (ex Sea World staff member) from Two Oceans Aquarium will be joining her.
The African penguin is our penguin as it is found nowhere else in the world, only on the Southern African coastline. Last year the African Penguin was added to the endangered species list due to the drastic decline in their numbers in recent years. If something does not change, the African penguin will be extinct in the wild in the next fifteen years.
Penguin Promises is about humans promising to make even one small change in their daily lives which will, together with everyone else’s promises, assist in saving the African Penguin. Some examples of promises are: no longer using straws with cooldrinks, drinking tap water, buying local wherever possible, not using plastic shopping bags….. etc.
Penguin Promises hopes that millions of people all over South Africa will join the campaign by either becoming a fan on facebook, following the walk on twitter, smsing their promise or visiting the website: www.penguinpromises.com.
