Kaluah the Green Turtle gets a Second Chance
A Green turtle who became known as Kaluah was found about 2km's offshore from Umgeni on the 4th November 2010. Not only was she trapped in netting she had a very deep large wound on her plastron (shell) as well as on her left back flipper. The animal care staff at uShaka Sea World treated her with daily scrubs and antibacterial applications. Kaluah was also passing plastic in her stool and was taken for X-Rays which revealed more plastic in the gut.
She responded well to treatment (which included 100% raw honey being applied to her wounds) and was soon showing signs of being hungry and feeding well. As the months ticked passed she became stronger and stronger and together with her friend India the young Hawksbill, she received her release papers for the veterinarian in May. It is always very sad to see an animal in such distress because of plastic pollution and entrapment in netting but she was one of the lucky turtles who found themselves in the care of uShaka Sea World turtle rehabilitation team.
She will always remain close to the hearts of her caregivers who spent countless hours tenderly caring for her and willing her to make it.
She was driven up to Sodwana bay very early on Friday 3rd June so that as the day was still breaking, together with India the Hawksbill turtle she was ready to board the boat at head out once again to sea, for a second chance in life.
